    1981-1983 Hydraulics Engineer- Designed spillways, outlet works, intakes, penstocks and surge tanks for hydroelectric projects. Carried out hydraulic design of pipelines and water hammer studies of pipelines incorporating valves and hydropower turbines. Co-ordinated reservoir routing studies and analyses of reservoir freeboard resulting from wind generated waves. Directed the design of spillway aeration devices for the prevention of cavitation. Developed computer programs for hydraulic analysis and design. Supervised junior engineers.

    2. Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

    1977-1978 Construction Engineer - Directed and supervised road construction associated with the completion of the 180-metre rockfill Thomson Dam in eastern Victoria. Initiated purchase of a computer to improve on-site cost control. Developed computer programs for cost control. Conducted site office engineering tasks.

    1975-1977 Water Resources Planning Engineer - Planned future water supply developments including dams, pipelines, pumping stations and water treatment plants. Developed a computer simulation model for water supply system studies.

    2012 Recognised for one of the top 15 Papers published during the last 50 years, in the 50th Anniversary Collection of Most Influential Papers Published in the Journal of Hydraulic Research (JHR) (published by the International Association of Hydraulic Research). The award paper is: Bergant, A., Simpson, A.R. and Vitkovsky, J.P. (2001). “Developments in unsteady pipe flow friction modelling.” Journal of Hydraulic Research, International Association of Hydraulic Research. Vol. 39, No. 3, 249–257. (119 citations to Feb. 2015– Scopus). For over half a century JHR has served as a key vehicle for reporting and promoting new ideas, theories, experiments, and novel applications in hydraulics and fluid mechanics. These 15 contributions have been prominent in the development of modern hydraulics and hydro-environment research and today continue inspiring new generations of hydraulic researchers.

    2010 Australian Water Association South Australian Premier’s Water Medal - The Australian Water Association’s Premier's Water Medal recognises an eminent individual for an outstanding contribution to the South Australian Water Industry or management and conservation of water in South Australia. December 2010.

    2010 Chairman’s Award – Water Industry Alliance (WIA) Awards - for building the intellectual future of the water industry, as a leading educator of the next generation of engineers and water industry participants. The WIA acknowledged Prof. Simpson’s instrumental role in the success of Optimatics, which it described as "one of South Australia's smartest water export success stories" and for also the development of products which create a competitive advantage based on intellectual property. This award is presented to a person deemed to have made a major contribution to the water industry either through actions or the implementation of water related programs of the highest significance to the community at large.  May 2010

    2008 "GN Alexander Medal" awarded to the authors of the best paper in Hydrology and Water Resources - published in an Institution of Engineers, Australia publication in the preceding 18 months for a paper entitled "Leak Location in Single Pipelines using Transient Reflections" published in the Australian Journal of Water Resources, Vol 11, No. 1, 2007, pp. 53-64. April 2008.

    2005 Prize for best journal paper in water distribution systems-American Water Works Association-2005 Distribution & Plant Operations Division Best Paper Award. "Cost savings and enhanced reliability for main rehabilitation and replacement," Journal of the American Water Works Association, Vol. 95, No. 8, August, 54-64. 2005 AWWA The paper outlines the innovative techniques used to evaluate and optimize rehabilitation and replacement options for some of San Diego's ageing transmission mains, resulting in a plan that will save $20 million in capital costs and increase the redundancy and reliability of the network.

    • Planning, design, operation and maintenance of water distribution system infrastructure.
    • Optimisation of the design and operation of municipal water distribution and pumping systems, irrigation and gas pipe networks using evolutionary algorithms (including genetic algorithms and ant colony optimisation).
    • Steady state computer simulation analysis of water distribution systems, in particular, improving both numerical solution techniques and the modelling of pressure reducing valves.
    • Optimisation of scheduling for irrigation water deliveries. 
    • Condition assessment of water distribution systems (e.g. leakage detection, block detection and pipe roughness calibration) using the inverse transient technique, the transient damping method and coded transients.
    • Field testing of large pipelines and water distribution systems using transients pressure waves for condition assessment
