FAME Sustainability Accelerate or Initiate grants - Strategic investment by the University of Adelaide.

The round of FAME (Foci And Magnets for Excellence) Sustainability grants was extremely competitive. There is no doubt that the final projects represent the diversity of talent across the University and will deliver truly interdisciplinary and innovative programs designed to build our capacity to address the key challenges identified within the 5 research missions.

Five research missions

These missions are:

1) Resilient, healthy, and equitable communities

2) Responsible resource production and consumption;

3) Planetary health and biodiversity restoration;

4) Accelerated access to clean and green technologies; and

5) Effective sustainability governance and decision making.

The following initiatives will be receiving strategic investment from The University of Adelaide to stimulate the development of new multi-disciplinary research projects related to the Research Missions* for Sustainable Transformation:

Grants awarded for Accelerate Scheme:

  • Prof. Peng Bi (HMS)  and  Prof. Andy Lowe (SET): Systems responses to the productivity, health and wellbeing consequences of climate change and biodiversity loss
  • Assoc. Prof. Cassandra Collins (SET)  and Assoc. Prof. Armando Corsi (ABLE): Vitivoltaics demonstration facility: Connecting stakeholders, building capacity, increasing climate resilience and accelerating access to clean and green technologies for the Australian wine industry
  • Dr. Lulu He (SET) and Assoc. Prof. Yan Tan (ABLE): Using Local Knowledge to Support Effective Transition and Sustainable Bushfire Risk Reduction in Australia
  • Dr. Shervin Kabiri (SET) and Maryam Zomorrodi (ABLE): Ameliorated compost or biosolid composite materials with safe and sustainable application in the agriculture
  • Dr. Cameron Shearer (SET) and Assoc. Prof. Sharyn Gaskin (HMS):  Future proofing remediation of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)
  • Prof. Paul Thomas (HMS) and Assoc. Prof. Phil Cassey (SET): Developing next-generation genetic biocontrol tools for targeted suppression of mammalian pests.
  • Prof. Sarah Wheeler (ABLE) and Prof. Javen Shi (SET): Investigating Water Security Issues in Australia through the lens of causal AI
  • Carmel Williams (HMS) and Prof. Veronica Soebarto (SET): From Cost to Value: Novel Decision-Making Tools for Harnessing Sustainable Economic Benefits of Trees and Greenspaces in Urban Planning.

  • Miss Larissa Arawaka Martins (SET) and Prof. Dino Pisaniello (HMS): Towards a smart window control system for aged-care facilities: new evidence on natural ventilation, energy efficiency and indoor air quality
  • Assoc. Prof. Patrick O’Connor (ABLE) and Dr. Thomas Prowse (SET): Credible Biodiversity Indicators for Barossa Food and Wine Industry ESG
  • Dr. Matthias Salomon (SET) and Dr. Jungho Suh (ABLE): Urban agriculture and food forests: A comprehensive review with a preliminary investigation into Adelaide’s residential PFAS soil contamination

  • Dr. Jodie Yuwono (SET) and Assoc. Prof. Indra Gunawan (ABLE): Australia’s Energy Transition Strategy Analysis from Techno-economic, Socio-technical and Political Perspectives
  • Dr. Wei Zhang (SET) and Dr. Juan Luo (ABLE): Sustainable Warriors or Marketing Mirage? Navigating the Truth Behind Greenwashing
