University Library Australia

A national borrowing scheme for staff and students

University Library Australia is a national borrowing scheme that allows all staff and students of Australian Vice Chancellors' Committee (AVCC) participating member universities to borrow in person from any other interstate university in Australia.
The University of Adelaide Library is a participant in the scheme.
Contents:

Who may borrow?
All students and staff from AVCC member universities are eligible to register at the University of Adelaide Library. You may only borrow in person. Membership is personal and not transferable.
Staff and students of the University of South Australia and Flinders University are automatically entitled to use the University of Adelaide Library; registration is not required. Details are on our Reciprocal borrowing page.

How do I apply?
You should ask in person for a Registration form during office hours (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm) from:
  • Services desk, Barr Smith Library Level 3 South
  • Loans desk, Waite Library
  • Loans desk, Roseworthy Campus Library

What documents do I need?
Students will be asked to present a photo ID as well as proof of current enrolment. This could be your enrolment advice form or other proof from your university.
Staff members will be asked to present a photo ID as well as proof of current employment with a university participating in the scheme. If you are not currently employed at an Australian university, for example, you are a visiting scholar, proof of affiliation with an AVCC university that specifies arrangements for indemnity for borrowing must be provided.

How much does it cost?
Payment of $50.00 [includes GST] entitles you to borrow books from the Library for the current calendar year until 28 February of the following year.

There is a charge of $11.00 [includes GST] for the replacement cost of a lost Library Card.

If an item is kept beyond the date of despatch of the first and final overdue notice requesting its return, an invoice will be sent for the cost of replacement of the item, plus a non-refundable handling charge of $30.00 per item.

Is registration permanent?
No. Membership is for the current calendar year only, no matter when you join throughout the year. Borrowing privileges will expire on 28 February of the following year.
Proof of continuing enrolment or employment will be required to renew your registration each year.

What may I borrow and how many?
  • Undergraduate students may borrow books from the Main collection, the Reserve collection, and from the branch libraries, and may have on loan up to fifteen books at a time.
  • Advanced level students (honours, higher degree, Diploma, M.A. qualifying and students enrolled in 4th-6th year) may borrow books from the Main collection, the Reserve collection, and from the branch libraries, and also may borrow bound volumes of journals from the Barr Smith Library. Advanced level students may have on loan up to twenty items at a time.
  • Staff members may borrow books from the Main collection, the Reserve collection, and from the branch libraries, and also may borrow bound volumes of journals from the Barr Smith Library. Staff members may have on loan up to fifty items at a time.

  • You are not entitled to use the Student computers service.
  • You may access many of the Library's electronic resources on public access terminals: there are six public access terminals behind the Information desk on Barr Smith Library Level 3. Remote access to electronic resources is not available.
  • No email access is possible.

Special conditions and restrictions may apply at the branch libraries.

Requests for interlibrary loan and document delivery are not part of this scheme and should be made to the library of the university at which you study or work.

Borrowing times
You may borrow until five minutes before the Library closes.

Renewing a loan
You may renew the loan of a book from the MyLibrary option on any Library catalogue terminal or remotely from any terminal that is connected to the University of Adelaide network.
You may also renew a loan in person - take the item to the Loans desk on or before the due date - or by telephone (telephone number is 8303 5759) - quote the barcode number from your Student ID Card and the title of the book.

A loan may not be renewed if another user is waiting for the book.

Returning books
Books on loan must be returned through the chutes at the Library entrance (or at the Exit desk) so that the loan can be correctly discharged.
The chutes at the Library entrance are permanently open for the return of items.

Requests
If the book you want is out on loan you may 'Request' it. This means that it will be kept for you at the Loans desk when it is returned, and we'll let you know that it is available.
To Request a book, call up its record on the Library Catalogue. Click on the Requests tab and follow the screen instructions. Full details are on a separate web page: How to Request that a book on loan be held for you.

Demerit points
Fair sharing of materials is the basis on which the Library operates. Demerit points are allocated when items are not returned by the due date at a rate of two points per day (or part of a day), except for items borrowed from the Reserve collection where demerit points accrue at the rate of four per hour (or part of an hour).
If you acccumulate sixty demerit points your borrowing privileges are withdrawn for fifteen days. You can check your demerit points by using the MyLibrary option on the Library catalogue.

More details about the demerit points scheme are available.
If you do not return items to the Library by the due date, this information may be sent to your home library where further sanctions may be imposed.

Please talk to a staff member at the Services desk (immediately to the left of the Loans desk) if you have a question regarding demerit points.

Please remember that if an item is kept beyond the date of despatch of the first and final overdue notice requesting its return, an invoice will be sent for the cost of replacement of the item, plus a non-refundable handling charge of $30.00 per item.
