An extraordinary gathering of world-class musicians will perform in a special memorial concert in Elder Hall this Sunday (August 15) to celebrate the life of the late Jiri Tancibudek.

Regarded as one of the world's best oboists, Tancibudek died in May aged 83 and had been a charismatic presence within and beyond the University of Adelaide's Elder Conservatorium of Music for more than five decades.

Performers - many of whom are former students of Tancibudek - from as far away as Vienna, Berlin and Hong Kong and across Australia have made the trip to Adelaide especially for the concert.

They will all be performing for free, in aid of the new Jiri Tancibudek Memorial Scholarship which has been established by the Elder School of Music and will be given to the best young oboists to study at the School.

Four of his grandchildren will also perform: Hannah Christ (oboist, in Year Six at Pembroke School), Sophia Heinz (age 10, from Berlin), Sarah Christ (harpist with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra) and Ralph Christ (leader of the European Mahler Orchestra).

Elder Professor of Music Charles Bodman Rae says the concert and scholarship are both fitting tributes to one of the Elder Conservatorium of Music's most distinguished and best-loved musicians.

"Jiri was more than a world-class performer; he was also a world-class teacher," Professor Bodman Rae says. "Many of his students have gone on to successful and prominent careers around the world, and the fact that so many of them are travelling considerable distances to perform here on Sunday shows the regard in which he is held."

Among the performers at the concert will be Jeffrey Crellin (Principal Oboe with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra), David Nuttall (oboist, from the Canberra School of Music at Australian National University), the Elder Conservatorium Chamber Orchestra and other friends, colleagues and former students.

The Jiri Tancibudek Memorial Concert will be held in Elder Hall this Sunday (August 15) at 6.30pm. Tickets are $15 adult/$10 concession, and are available from BASS (ph. 131 246) or at the door. Tax-deductible donations towards the Jiri Tancibudek Memorial Scholarship can also be made by contacting the Elder School of Music on (08) 8303 5925, or the Alumni, Community Relations and Development Office on (08) 8303 5800.
