South Australian Policy Online: Upcoming Events (15 items) http://www.sapo.org.au/event/ en Copyright The University of Adelaide 2008 The University of Adelaide web.services@adelaide.edu.au Bittersweet: being young in an older person's world http://www.sapo.org.au/event/event9843.html A decade ago youth unemployment loomed large in the national consciousness, but the policy and popular focus is now at the opposite end of the age spectrum, on older workers. I argue that this change in the national consciousness is misplaced. While there is sound evidence that the position of young people in the labour market has improved since the early 1990s, it remains weak relative to both prime age and older workers - and has, if anything, worsened relative to older workers. Moreover, there are emerging vulnerabilities for young people. The flow of young people into high-skilled full-time jobs appears to be occurring at a lower rate than for older age groups, despite the very substantial growth in high-skilled jobs over the period and despite the higher educational attainment of young people. The presentation will conclude with some conjectures that might form the basis of a future research program. In this lecture, Victoria Carrington presents a range of texts demonstrating the shift towards what Henry Jenkins called a `participatory culture'. It's a culture reflected by the out-of-school practices of many young people, using technologies like mobile phones to interact with one another through unique styles of social text. As they embrace these new forms of communication, it not only has obvious implications for the way they construct their own identity; it also sets a new context within which educators must now think about teaching literacy. Yet they have a profound impact on corporate performance and accountability. Lee Parker's presentation gives us a fly-on-the-wall insight into corporate governance based on his own board-level research and drawing on latest international research and practice. What are a director's role and responsibilities for strategic management, organisational control and internal boardroom governance? Lee examines all the processes, highlighting implications for future practice in boardroom corporate governance. All welcome A rights-based approach to the Israel-Palestine conflict: the best approach for peace http://www.sapo.org.au/event/event10084.html Acceptance of the need to uphold human rights is often a casualty in the continuing search for some resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The demolition of Palestinian homes and the construction of the wall dividing Palestinians and Israelis induce special types of tensions. The causes and effects of these developments will be explained by Dr Jeff Halper from his perspective as an active participant in the search for an end to the conflict. He will show how a rights-based approach should be central to a resolution, whether this be a one or two-state solution to the conflict, some kind of regional confederation, or some alternative approach.
