Access and Use of the Internet

The allocation of quotas to students is a mechanism by which the University manages access and use of the Internet. The amount of information downloaded from external websites is quantified in megabytes and a cost per megabyte is applied. The University funds quota amounts for some categories of students to enable University related Internet activity. The use of the University Internet sites does not count against these quotas.

You should read the information on these pages carefully so that you understand how Internet usage is monitored and reported as well as how to purchase more quota should you need it.

Undergraduate and Honours Students

Undergraduate and Honours students have been provided with an internet download quota for University related use of the Internet.

As mentioned above, the analysis of actual Internet download statistics indicate that the overwhelming majority of students will not be affected by the quotas which have been provided. However, Internet traffic will continue to be monitored and the University provided quotas will be increased where necessary, at the request of course supervisors.

Postgraduate Coursework Students

Postgraduate Coursework students will receive a University Funded Quota of 500Mb.

Staff and Postgraduate Research Students

Internet usage by staff and other categories of students will be reported to their associated School or Department which will be responsible for traffic costs.

All Staff and Students

All use of the Internet must be in accordance with University policy. Some types of internet use (eg, transmission of material of an obscene nature) are specifically prohibited by the Information Technology Acceptable Use Policy and/or State and Commonwealth law.

Please ensure that you carefully read the University's ' IT Acceptable Use Policy' so that you are clear about your obligations as well as any penalties that may apply for misuse of the service.
