About the School of Society and Culture

Our vision

We interrogate critical environmental, political, social, cultural and other issues that can be difficult to understand and address – not least because they are attended by variously motivated narratives and ‘quick facts’ that fail to understand their complexity. We offer the research skills, methodologies and scholarly integrity to deeply understand and address these issues, and contribute to making a better world.

Our students build transferable skills in critical thinking, communication and research, ensuring they graduate as responsible, ethical citizens interested in advancing equity, sustainability and security.

Whether they focus on climate change, keeping kids safe online, understanding how gender shapes society, exploring the everyday lives of people in Australia and across the world, or developing a deep understanding and scholarship of Indigenous Australia and how to contribute to decolonising knowledge, policy and everyday presumptions, students emerge with the capacity to take their knowledge to communities, policy making, development, aid and advocacy work, and a host of other contexts. Ask us about where and how our graduates are making a difference.
