Excellence in teaching and learning rewarded

Outstanding contributions to student learning have been recognised at the University of Adelaide.

Six staff have been awarded 2010 citations from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council. The citations, valued at $10,000 each, are awarded annually to both academic and professional staff who demonstrate "sustained dedication to improving the quality of the student learning experience".

"At the University of Adelaide, awards have been made to staff who have a unique impact on students through top-quality, inspirational learning environments," said Professor James McWha, Vice-Chancellor and President.

"This exceptional teaching is critical to students' success. When students find their studies to be lively and engaging, they embrace their work and appreciate the learning opportunities given to them.

"Each of this year's citation winners is to be commended for the quality of their efforts and for their positive influence on our students." The following citations have been awarded to staff:

Dr Steven Grainger (School of Mechanical Engineering)
For enhancing the engagement, learning outcomes and achievements of the diverse student body through the development of open-ended cooperative learning project frameworks;

Dr Ben McCann (School of Humanities - French)
For using language immersion, along with joie de vivre, to motivate students and inspire engagement in French grammar, literature and culture;

Mr Joshua McCarthy (School of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design);
For successfully promoting professional, academic and social interaction among a diverse cohort of digital design students using the participatory web, and dashes of humour;

Ms Catherine Snelling and Ms Sophie Karanicolas (School of Dentistry)
For sustained excellence in team teaching in a lively, imaginative and engaging manner that inspires enthusiastic, independent learning in the field of oral health;

Dr Natalie Williamson (School of Chemistry and Physics - Chemistry)
For combining humour, enthusiasm, clarity and strategic activities to arouse curiosity among chemistry students, encouraging a willingness to question and seek answers for deeper understanding.

The citations were presented to staff at a ceremony at the State Library of SA last month.
