AI on the Ground Seminar: Building a responsible ecosystem for AI in health
- Date: Fri, 25 Oct 2024, 10:30 am - 11:30 am
- Location: AIML
- Associate Professor Xiaoxuan Liu University of Birmingham
- Professor Alastair Denniston University of Birmingham
We were honoured to welcome Assoc Prof Xiao Liu and Prof Alastair Denniston from the University of Birmingham to the Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML) as speakers for our first AI on the Ground seminar, focusing on building a responsible artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem for the health sector.
Assoc Prof Liu and Prof Denniston explored the importance of assessing AI technologies for safety, efficacy, and equity, with a focus on:
- Data transparency as a cornerstone of AI implementation in healthcare
- Identifying and mitigating bias, including racial and ethnic disparities that impact model fairness
- Medical algorithmic audits and documentation to track explainability and accountability
While AI has demonstrated its applicability in the clinic, their discussion emphasised that AI systems act like mirrors, reflecting biases in the input data—raising the question, “Do these models serve everyone fairly?"
We were delighted to welcome over 55 attendees, both online and in-person, including representatives from the Women's and Children's Health Network including the Women’s and Children’s Aboriginal Health Unit, SAHMRI, and Central Adelaide.
For those interested, the seminar is now available to watch on YouTube.
