Course Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course students will be able to:
1 Explain the concepts and definitions used in fluid mechanics and thermodynamics; 2 Apply fundamental concepts and equations to practical problems; 3 Explain basic thermodynamics and its importance in thermal systems; 4 Explain basic gas laws and phase change processes; 5 Discuss the different forms of energy, its transfer and the laws that controls this transfer; 6 Discuss basic ideal thermal cycles and their application to daily life; 7 Recognise environmental responsiblity and current best practice for the design of efficient thermal system and cycles; and 8 Apply analytical cognitive skills and problem solving skills in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics.
The above course learning outcomes are aligned with the Engineers Australia Entry to Practice Competency Standard for the Professional Engineer. The course develops the following EA Elements of Competency to levels of introductory (A), intermediate (B), advanced (C):

Assessment

This assessment breakdown is registered as an exemption to the University's Assessment for Coursework Programs Policy. The exemption is related to the Procedures clause(s): 1. b. 2.
This course has a hurdle requirement. Meeting the specified hurdle criteria is a requirement for passing the course.
Hurdle requirements are:
* Minimum score of 50% for the Practical
* Minumum score of 40% for the Final Exam
Assessment Related Requirements
The Practical is compulsory part of a course. If a practical session is missed or a practcial report not handed in or a student fails to get at least 50% of the total possible lab marks, then that is grounds for FAILURE of the entire course.
Assessment Detail
Assignments – individual, distributed through the semester at least two weeks prior to a submission date
Quizzes – individual, distributed through the semesterPractical – assessment based on practical participation and a report (COMPULSORY component)
Final exam – open-book, 3 hours
Submission
Assignments and prac reports should be submitted via corresponding link on myuni. No late submissions are accepted although in special cases exemptions can be granted on individual basis. A “turn-around” timeline on assessments and the provision of feedback to students is approximately 2 weeks. Re-submission of work is not allowed.

Grades for your performance in this course will be awarded in accordance with the following scheme:
