MUSTHEAT 3001 - Music Theatre Performance 3A

North Terrace Campus - Semester 1 - 2022

Dance: This course extends skills and techniques learnt in the first two years. The dance stream continues to incorporate techniques of various dance and physical theatre forms but with a focus on tap and jazz/contemporary dance. An advanced level of dance as a soloist and ensemble precision are a feature, as is speed and accuracy in the assimilation of choreographic routines. Voice/Movement: A focus on reinforcing skills that encourage confident verbal coordination and expression. Students will continue to hone their technique through the examination of 'use of the self' and 'use of the text'. This will include psychophysical coordination and release, connection to breath, supporting the sound, resonance and range, muscularity and articulation. They will use text as the principle means to investigate the characteristics of language by exploring the elements of sound, image, sense and rhythm, and apply this investigation specifically, thoughtfully and with assurance in the rehearsal process and performance. Acting: This course is designed to deepen the practice of the individual in acting. Moving beyond the acquisition of skills towards an awareness of the whole performer, actors will focus on a series of acting and performance tasks designed to blend theory with practice, and to integrate a complex level of mind and body approaches to theatre performance, with a particular emphasis on contemporary approaches to dramaturgy. Dramaturgy is defined in this course as the art of realising the performance. Actors will focus on refining their techniques in all skills areas by interpreting or creating scenes and other works for the stage.
