Supporting schools in the new world of remote learning

The University’s Computer Science Education Research (CSER) Digital Technologies Education team has launched a range of learning and teaching resources to support teachers during this challenging time.

The CSER Project Team have worked with over 35,000 primary and secondary teachers across Australia over the last few years and wanted to help teachers, students and parents make a smooth transition to the world of online and remote learning. Over recent weeks the team have developed a suite of resources to support the teaching community.

Resources include a 30-Day Digital Technologies Challenge for parents and teachers, a series of unplugged, very accessible and achievable activities for students to do at home and exciting Augmented Reality activities that students can try from home using a smartphone or tablet.

Dr Rebecca Vivian, Research Fellow from the CSER has produced a helpful directory of remote learning and teamwork solutions for educators highlighting tools and apps such as FlipGrid, EdPuzzle, Padlet and Piazza as well as better known ones like Slack and Facebook Live.

‘It is understandable teachers may feel overwhelmed at the moment and so we have created free and accessible resources to support teachers during this unprecedented time’, says Dr Vivian, Research Fellow, CSER Group, University of Adelaide.

For those new to video conferencing, the team has produced infographics that will help teachers and students to get the best results from this new mode of delivery.

Schools’ online learning policies and procedures may need reviewing in light of the fast shift to online learning and related implications so the team has produced a guide to support school leadership.

"There is still much more that can be done to support schools transition during this unprecedented time," says Dr Vivian.

CSER are continuing to identify opportunities where team members can provide support for teachers, schools and university staff and are expanding support and resources in response.
