What will you do?

Our Master of Engineering (Environmental) comprises a foundation year and an advanced studies year. You will:

  • practise advanced environmental engineering analysis and design
  • study environmental science and engineering principles
  • pursue specialist topics according to your interests and career goals
  • build communication and project management skills
  • undertake a significant research project.

Where could it take you?

You might manage coastal erosion, develop policy on energy futures or come up with large-scale recycling schemes. You could supervise major urban water projects. Perhaps you’ll design high-speed railways or help with the construction of Australia’s next state-of-the-art sporting facility.

With the skills to plan, manage and assess the effects of major engineering projects on the natural and built environment, environmental engineers should also be able to solve the associated environmental problems. In addition to environmental engineers, graduates may also find employment in a wide range of areas and organisations including multinational companies, government departments, small and large manufacturers, private consulting engineering practices and the defence, energy and information technology industries.

Some of the more common careers include water resources engineers, coastal engineers, geotechnical engineers, and transportation and highways engineers.

Academic Program Rules

The Calendar is a comprehensive handbook of the University's academic program rules.

To qualify for the Master of Engineering (Environmental), the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 48 units, comprising:

  1. Core courses to the value of 12 units
  2. Foundation and elective courses to the value of 24 units
  3. A Research Project to the value of 12 units
  4. A total of 12 weeks practical experience approved by the Faculty and of which a minimum 6 weeks should be under the supervision of a professional engineer. Students who have previously completed an approved 12 week period of practical experience are exempt from this requirement. Students will need to enrol in ENG 7110 Internship PG course (0 units) to complete this requirement.
  5. International students with an IELTS overall score less than 8.0 are required to enrol in ENG 7057 Communication & Critical Thinking as one of their core courses.
