Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) with Bachelor of Music
Give the gift of music
Music in the secondary years is beneficial for the intellectual, emotional and social wellbeing of young people. For some students, it becomes a key source of pride, success and joy.
As a music specialist teacher in the secondary years you’ll help your students hone musical skills, pursue their goals and build confidence.
Develop your digital capabilities in our eLearning Program - the first and only one of its kind for Education students in Australia. We will show you how to use your own iPad with pencil and keyboard to its full teaching potential so you can earn Apple Teacher status. You might even do your first year placement in an Apple Distinguished School.
What will you do?
Our Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) with Bachelor of Music is designed in collaboration with the Elder Conservatorium of Music. You will:
- work with experienced musicians, performers, teachers and researchers
- build expertise in music and an additional non-music teaching area^
- explore educational issues, curriculum and practice relevant to the secondary years
- gain professional experience and connections through extensive school placements.
Where could it take you?
You’ll graduate fully qualified to register as a secondary teacher Australia-wide. If you’d like to teach overseas, your degree will be valid in most other countries. An education background will also prove invaluable in a wide range of careers servicing communities outside of the classroom.
Audition information is available from the Elder Conservatorium of Music.
^Teaching areas include: classroom music, instrumental music, economics, English, geography, history, languages (must be taken at advanced level), linguistics (EAL/D), mathematical sciences, media.

It is the student's responsibility to ensure they have a valid WWCC prior to undertaking any professional experience placement or in-school activities. Degree Structure
Our four year double degrees allow you to specialise in two subject areas taught in the secondary years of high school. Your first three years of study are focused on building your expertise in these two teaching areas.
Throughout the degree you will also undertake education courses and professional experience placements. The final year of study prepares you to be a teaching professional with the focus on curriculum, methodology, pedagogy and professional experience placements in schools.
The Bachelor of Teaching is for students who have not already commenced university study. If you have already commenced a degree, you should consider completing that degree and then apply for the Master of Teaching (Secondary). Students completing the requirements of the Bachelor of Teaching are eligible to gain credit towards the Master of Teaching degree.
Please note:
- Mid-year entry will only be available to domestic students. Due to the program structure and professional experience placements, students commencing mid-year study will complete their program in 4.5 years instead of 4 years.
- International students who are currently studying at the University of Adelaide may apply to this program mid-year via internal transfer. Approval is based on your past and current enrolments, and is assessed by the Faculty of Arts, Business, Law and Economics on a case-by-case basis.

Testimonial
I really enjoyed being taught by practising teachers. They shared relevant and up-to-date examples of current curriculum, and the challenges that they face in the classroom. I really got a feel for what teaching is like and how to effectively engage students at the right level of challenge.
