  • Biography/ Background

    Frank Andrew Smith (known as Andrew Smith). MA (1965), PhD (1967), Cambridge UK. Also PhD (Adelaide) ad eundem gradum, 1968.

    Appoined Lecturer, University of Adelaide, 1967. Retired as Professor of Botany, end December 2000 after University service that included Chair of Department, Associate Dean of Science, membership of Executive Committee (Research portfolio) and University Council. Appointed Emeritus Professor of the University from January 2001. Also Adjunct Professor, originally in Department of Soil & Water, School of Earth & Environmental Sciences; following restructuring now in the Soils research group, School of Agriculture, Food & Wine.

    Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science (1990)

    Australian Government Centenary Medal (2001), for services to biology and education

    Honorary Professor, Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing

    Honorary Professor, Institute of Urban Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xiamen

    Fellow of the Borneo Research Council

  • Research Interests

    I am no longer actively involved in research projects and do not supervise postgraduate students. However, I maintain the following research interests:

    Plant-soil relations, especially the physiology and ecology of plant-fungal (arbuscular mycorrhizal) symbioses that occur in most plants worldwide, under many soil conditions.

    Soil toxicity, especially arsenic

    Ecology and history of Borneo, especially the development of trading links with the outside world in pre-colonial times.

  • Professional Interests

    Ecosystem and agricultural sustainability, especially in relation to soil health.

    Climate change.

    Development of international research links.
