Biography/ Background
In 2006, Dr Anna Leonard completed a bachelor of Health Sciences at The University of Adelaide, followed by an Honours degree in Pathology (First Class) in 2007. Anna’s honours work investigated the role of the neuropeptide substance P following traumatic brain injury with a specific focus on sex differences. Extending this work to a different area, she embarked on her PhD in 2009, at the University of Adelaide, evaluating the role of substance P following traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). Upon completion of her PhD Anna was awarded the Dean’s Commendation for Doctoral Thesis Excellence and also the 2012 University Doctoral Research Medal for the high quality and innovation nature of her doctoral work.
In 2013, Anna was awarded a Neil Sachse Foundation Post-doctoral Research Fellowship to continue her research at the University of Adelaide. During this time Anna further developed her PhD research and began investigating the importance of raised intrathecal pressure following traumatic SCI. In 2014-2015 Anna will undertake a post-doctoral position at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where she will learn the skills and techniques required to perform a much needed clinically relevant model of SCI. Upon her return Anna aims to establish this model within Adelaide which she believes will improve clinical translation. The future focus of Dr Leonard’s research will be on the role of raised spinal pressure following injury and the development of novel therapeutic interventions aimed at reducing such increases.
