  • Biography/ Background

Lee graduated from Flinders University in 1997 with a Bachelor of Arts (Sociology and Legal Studies), and in 2004 completed a Graduate Diploma in Information Studies at University of South Australia.

In 2007, whilst working in a government research library, she finished her Masters in Library and Information Management, focusing on the preservation of old and rare books.

She joined The University of Adelaide Library in 2013, where she now works as the Librarian in Rare Books & Manuscripts.

In her role, she draws on collection expertise to facilitate the research pursuits of University staff, students and the wider community.  She has responsibility for care and augmentation of the collections, and co-ordinates the conservation of fragile materials via the Adopt-a-Book Program, a 2012 initiative of the Friends of the Library.  She also collaborates with industry colleagues and the wider Special Collections team on exhibitions, and has curated three of her own, related specifically to book construction and illustration, which are now available online.

Personally, Lee has a keen interest in bookbinding and particularly in the ways an original binding (and subsequent repairs) contributes to an item’s provenance.  She has trained under accredited bookbinders and paper conservators and fulfilled The Society of Bookbinders’ requirements for the craft of nineteenth century case binding in 2022.  Most recently, she completed an intensive course in Turkish Ebru, the UNESCO heritage listed art of water marbling, the results of which can often be found on the endpapers of old and rare books.
