Iowa State University, 1931, 1936
In the summer of 1931 Fisher paid a 6 week visit to Iowa State University lecturing on Statistical Methods for Research Workers and The Genetical Theory of Natural Selection. He visited again in 1936 lecturing on his Design of Experiments (1935) and seriously considered the offer of a special appointment, but was discouraged because of the hot summers. Fisher had lasting impact on the teaching of statistics at Iowa and the development of the Iowa State Statistical Laboratory.
India 1938
In January 1938 Fisher presided over the First Indian Statistical Conference in Calcutta. He travelled throughout India and lectured at Calcutta University, the All-India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health and the University of Aligarh. Fisher visited Santiniketan (at the invitation of Rabindranath Tagor), the Institute of Population Research in Lucknow and the Imperial Agriculture Research Institute in New Delhi. He also visited the Irrigation Research Laboratory to advise the Government of the Punjab on the difficult problem of rising of water levels in irrigated areas.
Fisher’s visit was of great importance to the development of statistical studies in India. He discussed problems with research workers and made valuable suggestions for new approaches, and persuaded high officials and leaders of commerce and industry of the need for formal statistical research. Fisher formed a life-long friendship with the statistician Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis and his wife and maintained close contact with the Indian Statistical Institute.
