Data Analytics - Physics
Whether it is a team of astrophysicists sifting through Petabytes of data in search of gravitational waves, or a small research team trying to improve cancer diagnosis, physics is generating a tidal wave of information worldwide.
The Physics major within the Bachelor of Applied Data Analytics teaches the skills that underpin much of our current technology and engineering, as well as the theoretical techniques and equations that make it highly applicable across a range of areas. You will:
- build a broad knowledge base in topics areas such as mechanics, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, space science, astrophysics, particle physics, relativity, quantum mechanics, electronics and lasers.
- learn from and conduct research projects with cutting-edge data analysis techniques from members of the research teams that discovered the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider, extragalactic neutrinos with the IceCube experiment, gravitational waves with the LIGO experiment and high energy astrophysicists hunting for dark matter with the Cherenkov Telescope Array
- use data to attack a range of problems, such as hunting for new particles at the Large Hadron Collider, improving cancer diagnosis techniques in medical imaging, predicting energy use across the national grid, searching for cyber-attacks on Australian computers, improving image reconstruction in gamma ray astronomy and transforming the sensitivity of gravitational wave astronomy
Many physicists already enter the data science industry based on their research and modelling skills. The combination of physics and data science courses will make you highly employable in areas such as quantitative finance, consultancy, defence, climate modelling, resources, industrial physics, big data and data analysis.
