Commercialisation seminars give students extra boost

A series of free commercialisation seminars for the State's best young minds begins today (Wednesday, September 24) at the University of Adelaide.

Developed by the university's Education Centre for Innovation and Commercialisation (ECIC) and hosted by the university's Adelaide Graduate Centre, the Research: A Commercial Perspective seminars are designed for postgraduate research students.

The seminars feature a range of prominent speakers from both the academic and business community, including Executive Director at the University's Institute for International Business, Economics and Law Andrew Stoler, and former NASA project manager David Lindelien.

A total of six seminars will be held this week and next, finishing on Thursday, October 2. They will be broken down into various subject areas such as Engineering, Humanities, Health Sciences, Law, Commerce and Animal Science.

ECIC Director Joanne Pimlott says the seminars offer the perfect introduction to the world of commercialisation to students from all disciplines.

"It is critical for universities to produce high-quality students who have a good understanding of the multiple pathways that are open to the researcher, including both academia and industry," Ms Pimlott says.

"We are providing an opportunity for the researcher to gain an understanding of the commercial environment and the skills needed to engage successfully with business and industry.

"The ECIC not only recognises this but is acting on it, providing a free seminar for the university's postgraduate research students to learn what is needed to succeed in business and industry after they complete their research here."
