The University has partnered with the Australian Institute of International Affairs (SA) to support the ‘Diplomacy in the Bar’ series staff and students and alumni. The series was developed by the AIIA SA as an opportunity to allow experts to present public talks on their area of expertise relevant to international affairs.

Written in 1889, James Smith’s Argus review of the 9 by 5 Impression Exhibition in Melbourne remains a classic example of the anti-modern critic of the day. It didn’t prevent several of the ‘9 by 5’ artists becoming champions of Australian national art, but Smith’s style of tabloid art criticism has all but died in Australia, despite its lineage long in newspapers for over a century. What does art criticism – and the more generic cousin, ‘art writing’, have to offer an endlessly diverse art world today?
