The Lyric Now Colloquium & Public Reading

The Changing Nature of Arts Criticism

Written in 1889, James Smith’s Argus review of the 9 by 5 Impression Exhibition in Melbourne remains a classic example of the anti-modern critic of the day. It didn’t prevent several of the ‘9 by 5’ artists becoming champions of Australian national art, but Smith’s style of tabloid art criticism has all but died in Australia, despite its lineage long in newspapers for over a century. What does art criticism – and the more generic cousin, ‘art writing’, have to offer an endlessly diverse art world today?

Space Week - Technical Issues for Construction in Space - Panel Discussion
