Professor Jennie Shaw appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic)
The University of Adelaide has today announced Professor Jennie Shaw has been appointed to the role of Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Academic).
Her appointment follows a national and international search, and will officially commence on Monday 9 August.
Professor Shaw has been an interim appointment in the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) role since June 2020, while also concurrently serving as Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts, a position she has held since October 2013. As Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Shaw leads the University’s Division of Academic and Student Engagement.
In announcing her appointment, Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Peter Høj AC paid tribute to Professor Shaw for her outstanding and dedicated service to the University community.
“Taking on two senior full-time roles for more than a year – and doing so during the disruption of a global pandemic, at a critical and vulnerable time for our University – says much about Jennie’s commitment to the University of Adelaide, and her commitment to our students and staff,” Professor Høj said.
“I thank Jennie for her leadership in helping to guide the University through that disruption, with a strong focus on the welfare and academic success of our students both here in South Australia and overseas.”
As an Executive Dean, Professor Shaw has led a period of renewed excellence for the Faculty of Arts, both in teaching and learning and in research. During her time, the Faculty has developed new and successful programs, such as Criminology and Music Theatre, added the School of Education into the Faculty, attracted world-leading academics in the social sciences, humanities and creative arts, and engaged in community and schools outreach through the Open Music Academy program, in partnership with the State Government.
With a background in music research and teaching, Professor Shaw is former Head of School and Associate Dean of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music at the University of Sydney, and was Head of the School of Arts as well as Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the University of New England, before joining the University of Adelaide.
Professor Shaw and her Divisional team will work with colleagues across the University to develop new course offerings, to further innovation in our approaches to teaching and learning, and to improve the student experience.
In addition to her role as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Shaw will also concurrently remain in her position as Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts until 24 September.
