Statement from The Group of Eight on the Russian Invasion of Ukraine
Australia’s leading research-intensive universities, the Group of Eight (Go8) stands in solidarity with the global research community in condemning Russia’s attack on Ukraine’s people and sovereignty.
As universities who are committed to research, education and global engagement with the goal of creating a better world, we condemn the invasion and express our sympathy and support for our Ukrainian colleagues and all who are affected.
We are deeply concerned for Ukrainian staff and students in our universities who experience the grief and suffering of war unfolding in their home country.
The Go8 notes that many Russians, including academics and researchers have bravely taken actions or issued statements condemning this war.
The Go8 is offering counselling and other assistance to international students and faculty affected by the crisis. We have acted quickly to identify and contact individual students and researchers from the Ukraine and Russia, as well as relevant student clubs and societies.
Our universities are offering access to advisors, counselling services and peer support, as well as establishing ‘chat’ channels for international students currently studying offshore.
