Former PM reflects on her ‘misogyny speech’

Julia Gillard smiles into the camera

Ten years after delivering her famous speech in the Federal Parliament, former Prime Minister Julia Gillard will appear in conversation at the University of Adelaide to reflect on the pervasive issue of misogyny in our community.

This event coincides with the new book by Australia’s first female Prime Minister Not Now, Not Ever which explores the history and culture of misogyny, the contents of the patriarchy’s toolbox, and gender and misogyny in the media and politics.

Professor Gillard, an alumna, joined the University of Adelaide as a Visiting Honorary Professor in 2013.

“I’m honoured to return to my alma mater, the University of Adelaide, which is a place that is very close to my heart,” said The Honorary Professor Julia Gillard AC.

“I have great memories of being involved in university life as President of Adelaide University Union, and serving as a student representative on the University Council."

Not Now, Not Ever includes contributions from Mary Beard, Jess Hill, Jennifer Palmieri, Chanel Contos, members of the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership, and more.

While the in-person event has sold out, it will be livestreamed and a recording will be made available online in the days after the event.
