Family fun illuminates University
Light-filled fun will visit the University’s North Terrace campus when the spectacular Illuminate festival returns this July.
A kaleidoscope of colour and joy with free light-up games for the young – and young at heart – will be clustered around Bonython Hall. Pop-up bar Lumen will offer drinks and music for a more relaxing experience.
“The University of Adelaide is pleased to be hosting the LAPS Games and Lumen Bar on our North Terrace campus, as part of the spectacular Illuminate Adelaide program,” said Dr Jessica Gallagher, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (External Engagement) at the University of Adelaide.
“As part of the beating heart of our vibrant city, we’re excited to welcome visitors to enjoy these family-friendly and free interactive games, and to gather in the Lumen Bar as a community.”
The interactive playground LAPS Games is an installation of seven light-filled games, each with a twist, which form part of Illuminate Adelaide's City Lights program.
Beautifully illuminating their surrounding spaces, LAPS Games is suitable for the whole family to enjoy. They deliver giant-sized light structures to test player speed, strength, memory, and wits, in a bright, bold display to fill the winter night.

The games will remain on the University of Adelaide’s North Terrace campus between 7–23 July, from 6 to 11 pm.
Games include:
- Light Reflex: a light installation that tests reflexes and accuracy: players attempt to catch fast-moving light to win.
- Snake: a nostalgic throw-back to old phone games, this experience features light moving across a screen.
- Spider Hunt: an exciting game involving chasing away spiders with weapons made of light.
- Line 4: inspired by Connect 4, this game involves lots of stomping fun in order to drop tokens of light.
- Light Boom: a game that tests players’ strength with big jumps and extending light.
- Singing Light: an interactive experience that turns the sound of visitors’ voices into a spectacle of light.
- Templar: a game to test memory and trick opponents.
Lumen pop-up bar also returns this winter on Goodman Crescent Lawns overlooking the light games, for those seeking relaxation and tasty treats after an energetic round of activity.
Lumen offers an opportunity to come together in a cosy atmosphere beneath a beautiful glass marquee to sample wines, spirits, and beer produced by talented University of Adelaide alumni.
Visitors will be serenaded on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights by Elder Conservatorium of Music students past and present and can enjoy a diverse mix of delectable food from a gourmet menu, tasty wines, and even kid-friendly options from the family tent.
Hosted by the University of Adelaide, Lumen will serve food and wine by East End Cellars and be open Tuesdays to Sundays from 4pm until late.
