Leading environmental scientist takes the reins
Plant, ecological and evolutionary geneticist, Professor Andrew Lowe will lead the University of Adelaide’s Environment Institute as its newly appointed Director.
Professor Lowe has a strong connection to the Environment Institute, which he first joined in 2009 when it was established by the University of Adelaide to tackle some of the most complex and critical environmental problems facing Australia and the world.
As Director, Professor Lowe will bring together leading research groups at the University in the fields of science, engineering, law, economics, and policy relating to the conservation, management and sustainable use of natural resources, including biodiversity, water and ecosystems in natural and urban landscapes.
“I’m thrilled to take on this leading role at the Environment Institute and continue to deliver real research outcomes that will benefit the health of the environment at a time when our delicate ecosystems are under significant threat,” said Professor Lowe.
“The Institute is home to an outstanding team of researchers and, as Director, I’m looking forward to fostering more collaboration with our members and stakeholders to ensure the Institute achieves its vision for a better future.”
Professor Lowe’s appointment was welcomed by University of Adelaide’s Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Excellence), Professor Laura Parry.
“We are delighted Professor Lowe has accepted the role of Director at the University of Adelaide’s Environment Institute,” said Professor Parry.
“Professor Lowe is a dynamic and innovative leader with an outstanding record of academic achievements. He will continue to guide an impressive team of talented researchers who are committed to leading environmental change throughout the world.”
Building upon the Institute’s 15 years of investing in the future of the environment through world-leading research, Professor Lowe is excited to further highlight the meaningful work already being undertaken by its community of researchers.
‘We are expanding an exciting portfolio of initiatives that combine fundamental research with practical implementation of solutions alongside leading environmental partners,” Professor Lowe said.
These include initiatives such as restoration of temperate marine ecosystems; biodiversity climate adaptation and rewilding; water resources, management and policy; green urban futures and planetary health; combatting wildlife and environmental crime; citizen science and engagement; enviro-technology and natural capital; and pollution and natural hazard mitigation.
