2020 Lloyd Cox Memorial Lecture by Prof Jonathan Carapetis
Professor Jonathan Carapetis AM from Telethon Kids Institute presented the 2020 Lloyd Cox Memorial Lecture on the topic:The New Closing the Gap Agreement – Implications for research.
The ink is now dry on the new National Agreement on Closing the Gap. This sees a greater focus on shared decision making and is built around partnerships, strengthening the community-controlled sector, addressing structural racism and sharing data. This agreement provides an opportunity to address the ongoing disparities between First Nations people and the wider population in Australia in ways that we have failed to do until now, and requires a re-think of everything we do to Close the Gap. Research is no different.
Prof Carapetis explored how researchers can make a meaningful contribution in light of the new Agreement, and highlight some practical examples of successful partnerships between researchers and Indigenous communities and organisations.
