The AAMRI Rising Star Award recognises an outstanding mid-career researcher from an AAMRI Member Institute.  The inaugural winner and finalists were presented by Hon Mark Butler MP, Minister for Health and Aged Care, at the annual AAMRI Dinner at Parliament House on 18 October 2023.

Professor Polo is SAiGENCI's Program Lead for Cancer Epigenetics as well as the University of Adelaide's inaugural Director of the Adelaide Centre for Epigenetics (ACE).

He and his team were the first to uncover the epigenetic memory and the mechanism underpinning reprogramming.  His discoveries have expanded our understanding of early human development and have led to improvements for maternal and fetal health.  Through the development of innovative in vitro models, Professor Polo’s research has shed light on critical cellular and molecular mechanisms that were previously challenging to study.

Professor Polo holds scientific leadership roles, has received awards for his scientific excellence and for fostering diversity and inclusion in academia, and builds the scientific community through leadership in societies and in peer review.
