Let's Eat: Women Writing Australia

Adelaide Writers Week in partnership with the University of Adelaide & East End Cellars invites you to a series of special dinner events that highlight key authors literary practice from the festival.

With: Inala Cooper & Gail Jones

International Women’s Day is a moment of reckoning, celebrating hard-won rights for women, and mapping what is still to be done. Australians see themselves as pioneers of gender equality, yet women are still underrepresented in the corridors of power, perform most domestic labour and suffer unprecedented levels of sexual and family violence. Join two women writers - acclaimed novelist Gail Jones, and Yawuru woman Inala Cooper, Director of Murrup Barak, the Melbourne Institute for Indigenous Development at the University of Melbourne - to discuss what it is to write Australia from a female perspective. Does the sex or gender of the author still matter?

Accompanying the talk between these dynamic women is a menu that has been carefully curated to showcase the talents of female business owners. From the bread by Lost Loaf’s Emma Shearer, to the oysters by Carly Thompson from Gazander Oysters, to croissant ice cream by Anna Rogers from Prove Patisserie and artisan cheese by Kris Lloyd Artisan, each of the five courses will celebrate the contributions of women in the culinary industry. They'll be accompanied by a wine selection will tantalise your taste buds and leave you wanting more.

Facilitator: Dr Maggie Tonkin, Senior Lecturer, Creative Arts & Literary Studies, University of Adelaide
