Communication on the situation in the Middle East

We have witnessed with great sadness the violence and loss of life from the Hamas-Israel conflict and its affect on the community at large. The University shares community concerns regarding the distressing and escalating situation in the Middle East.

We recognise that within the University community there are individuals with strong connections to the region, some of whom have family and friends directly and deeply affected by the conflict.

As a global institution, we appreciate the tremendous value of bringing a diverse array of staff and students together. Within our diversity, we respect that there are wide-ranging opinions on the situation in the Middle East, including those within our student community.

It is important to acknowledge the Australian Government’s position, which includes calls for an immediate ceasefire, the delivery of humanitarian aid, and the release of all hostages.

The University also recognises the importance of aligning our financial decisions with the University’s mission and values. Our investment practices screen out funds that invest in controversial weapons, including cluster munitions, biological and chemical weapons, and land mines.

Our global position includes partnering with Australia’s defence sector, where those partnerships align with the national interest and are consistent with the University’s values and objectives.
