Open Book Does Not Mean Open Artificial Intelligence

Upholding Academic Integrity in Quizzes

It’s time for a crucial reminder about maintaining academic integrity, especially when it comes to open book quizzes. While these assessments allow you to consult your textbooks and notes, this flexibility should not be mistaken for permission to copy and paste answers or utilize AI tools for assistance.

The Academic Integrity Policy applies to all assessments submitted by University of Adelaide students. You must only submit your own work for assessment, representing your own understanding.

So, what does academic integrity look like in the context of open book quizzes? Here are some guidelines to help you navigate this:

  • Open book means you can use your course materials to aid your understanding and help you answer questions. However, it does not mean transferring text directly from your resources into your quiz answers. Instead, engage with the material, synthesize information, and express it in your own words.
  • While AI tools might seem like a convenient option, using AI to generate answers breaches academic integrity. Your answers should reflect your understanding and effort, not the capabilities of technology.
  • If you do reference specific ideas or direct quotes from your materials, make sure to cite them properly. This not only gives credit to the original authors but also demonstrates your ability to integrate and acknowledge various sources.
  • Open book quizzes can be deceptively time-consuming. Plan your time effectively so you can thoroughly engage with your materials and formulate well-crafted responses without resorting to shortcuts.

By adhering to these practices, you ensure that your academic work remains authentic and meaningful, and that you acquire the knowledge and skills you need to succeed.
