Upload your pages

Once you have created or changed a page on your web site, it must be transferred to the web server before it can be seen by others.

Web servers

The development machine, webdev, is a staging server which is intended to be used to preview and develop content for web sites. This enables changes to web sites to be checked on-line before they are made available for public viewing. This preview process is an essential intermediate stage between the creation of pages on a local computer and having them appear live on the University web site.

The development server has an indentical set up to the live server with the same style sheets, etc. This means that pages viewed on the development server will appear exactly as they would on the live server so that page layouts can be checked as well as links and other aspects of the site. Only when the page has been fully previewed should they be uploaded to the live site.

This safeguard aids in preventing broken pages from appearing on the live University site. In addition, the multi-stage upload process provides additional security by preventing direct access to pages on the live web site.

Upload process

There are two stages of uploading your pages before they become visible to users viewing the University of Adelaide web site. The first stage is to upload pages created or modified on a local computer to the development server in order to preview them. Once these pages have been fully checked, the changes can then be uploaded to the live server and so become publicly visible.

Uploading to the development server

We support two methods for performing the upload, depending on the software used to create or change your site. If you are using Dreamweaver to maintain your web site, the best option is to use the built-in ftp (file transfer protocol) tool which allows you to manage your site and upload files. Otherwise, if you are using Netscape Composer or another web development tool, we support the use of WS_FTP.

Uploading to the live server

Once changes to the site have been fully checked on the development server, they can be uploaded onto the live web server. This is done using a program called WebAccess which has been developed by the Online Media Unit to allow site maintainers to perform this final upload. WebAccess is run on the webdev development server, at URL: http://webdev.adelaide.edu.au/webaccess
