This week, a packed Bonython Hall at the University of Adelaide was host to the latest Julia Gillard annual public lecture.  The lecture series, named after The Hon. Julia Gillard, a University of Adelaide Visiting Honorary Professor as well as Australia’s 27th and only woman prime minister, has become an opportunity to discuss many of Australia's most pressing concerns.

This week, the University of Adelaide and Commonwealth Bank announced a landmark five-year partnership to establish the co-branded CommBank Centre for Foundational AI Research at Lot Fourteen. This collaboration embodies a shared vision between industry and academia, driving critical advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) that will elevate research and educational outputs at the University’s Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML).

A recent study from Amazon found that 90 per cent of Australian employers believe their organisations will use AI-related solutions by 2028, and 77 per cent of Australian workers want to upskill in AI to support their career advancement. While both employers and employees are enthusiastic about embracing AI, there’s a looming AI skills gap impacting both technical and non-technical workers that must be overcome if Australia is to build an AI-ready workforce.
