Partners

Led by the University of Adelaide, this project brings together the research expertise, industry knowledge and facilities of our partners.

This $15.1M project is being funded with cash and in-kind contributions from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), industry partners and research partners.

Kwinana alumina refinery

Alcoa's Kwinana Alumina Refinery has an annual production capacity of 2.2 million metric tons.

Industry partners

Industry partners are contributing $620K of in-kind contributions to the Project in the form of:

  • Raw materials for experimental tests (e.g. alumina trioxide)
  • Leadership and support for process modelling, process integration, techno-economic assessments, feasibility assessments and commercialisation planning
  • Validation of process models and feasibility assessments
  • Access to industry expertise and capability for the mentoring and supervision of students
  • Representation on the management team and the technical steering committee .

Alcoa is the world's leading producer of alumina (aluminium oxide), which is used in a wide range of industrial processes and products. Alcoa currently supplies 15% of the international alumina market.

Pinjarra alumina refinery

Alcoa's Pinjarra Alumina Refinery has an annual production capacity of 4.2 million metric tons.

Research partners

The research partners together are contributing $646K cash and $8.74M of in-kind resources, including:

  • Unparalleled expertise in reactor development, two phase flows and laser diagnostics
  • Leadership and support for process modelling, process integration, techno-economic assessments and feasibility assessments
  • Time spent researching and supervising students of the Project
  • Facilities.

Australian Renewable Energy Agency

This project was awarded $4.5M grant funding in 2016 by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency as part of the Research and Development Program.
