Darius Chapman wins APHRS 2013 Poster Award for Basic and Translation Research

Darius Chapman continues his winning run with a further award for his work on mapping AF at the Asia-Pacific Heart Rhythm Society in Hong Kong. All this within the first year of his PhD program at CHRD. Well done Darius – a great choice to move out of industry!

CHRD team are first in the world to implant new injectable loop recorder

Prof Prash Sanders and the CHRD team implant the first percutaneous injectable loop recorder (Reveal LINQ). This technology opens the door to identifying episodes of AF to allow early anticoagulation and stroke prevention. In addition, it extends the existing capabilities of investigation of palpitations and syncope. Well done Vanessa Maxwell and Jonathon Foote from our clinical trials team and Medtronic Clinical Trials Staff for enabling this to be the first world-wide implant. Rajiv Mahajan awarded First Place in the Ralph Reader YIA of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand 2013

Rajiv Mahajan is having an outstanding year after being awarded the Heart Rhythm Society YIA earlier this year and in August was awarded the Prestigious Cardiac Society Ralph Reader Award. Only one Australian has ever before won both of these awards. A superb effort Rajiv – we are looking forward to great things from you.

Darius Chapman wins the ARI Award 2013

Darius Chapman

Darius Chapman left industry to pursue his ambitions in academia – and that he is doing! He was awarded the ARI Prize for innovation with his development of DAT mapping of atrial fibrillation. His work potentially brings us a step closer in identifying the sites that maintain atrial fibrillation to guide future therapy. Well done Darius.

NHMRC achievement award – Congratulations Professor Prash Sanders!

Professor Prash Sanders has recently received a prestigious NHMRC Achievement Award for the highest ranked Practitioner Fellowship. His application – “Prevention and management of atrial fibrillation: a new paradigm”
includes a translational series of studies that focus on reducing hospitalisation, reducing stroke risk, improving mortality and prevention. It aims to build research infrastructure in heart rhythm disorders across Australia and New Zealand.

CHRD PhD student Rajiv Mahajan wins Heart Rhythm Society Young Investigator Award 2013

Rajiv Mahajan was awarded the Heart Rhythm Society Young Investigator award in Denver on the 10 May 2013. Rajiv presented work from his PhD that demonstrates for the first time that the substrate for AF due to obesity can be reversed by weight reduction. Congratulations Rajiv on an outstanding achievement. You have done the University of Adelaide and the Centre for Heart Rhythm Disorders proud.

CHRD Researcher Melissa Middeldorp awarded the Heart Rhythm Society Affiliate Prize

Melissa Middeldorp was awarded the Heart Rhythm Society Affiliate Prize in Denver on 10th May 2013. Melissa’s presented a case series of thyrotoxicosis occurring very late after the cessation of amiodarone. This research highlights the need for long term surveillance of patients who have been treated with amiodarone. Well done Melissa on your outstanding performance at your first (of many) podium presentations.

Successful Heart Rhythm Society Annual Scientifiic Sessions, Denver, USA

Congratulations to all CHRD students and researchers who presented and represented the group in Denver at HRS 2013. A total of 31 original abstracts presented by the group. An outstanding effort – well done.
