A Workshop on Gender in the Health Curriculum

The Alliance of Gender Scholars took part in a workshop with Professor Vivienne Moore on Thursday 27th to discuss her efforts to challenge the ideas that our evolutionary biology creates distinctive brains, aptitudes and behaviours in men and women. And that these can unwittingly be reinforced in reproductive health and other subjects, merely through silence. Please email gender@adelaide.edu.au if you know/have any Honours or post-graduate students with a focus on gender who would like to get involved with the Alliance or if you would like to run a workshop/discussion group or presentation with Alliance members.

The Fay Gale Centre Lunchtime Seminar Series

This months seminar will be presented by PhD candidate Tarmia Klass and will be outlining her research proposal. Her work is titled 'Disruptive Bodies in Discursive Space: An Auto/Ethnographic Exploration of Body Positivity and Fat Acceptance on Instagram.' True Selfie: Adelaide Festival of Ideas

Fay Gale Centre Director, Professor Megan Warin, and PhD student Cambrey Payne will be taking part in a panel alongside activist Clementine Ford and writer/director Taryn Brumfitt on the topic of how social media has reshaped our lives and how we view ourselves. SA Women's & Gender Studies Annual Public Lecture 2021

Dr Juliet Watson, President of the Australian Women's and Gender Studies Association, will be giving a public lecture in July entitled 'Miscarrying in the Car: Centring Gendered Experiences of Homelessness.' By putting gender at the centre of how we understand homelessness, this lecture will bring to light complexities and dynamics that too often are ignored when exploring this space. Reading Feminism: June Book-club Meeting

This month we are looking at poetry as a decolonising feminist practice/methodology with two texts, ARCHIVAL-POETICS by Dr. NATALIE HARKIN, a Narungga poet and theorist, and BORDERLANDS/LA FRONTERA by GLORIA ANZALDÚA, a Chicana poet and theorist. NTEU - The Carolyn Allport Scholarship

The National Tertiary Education Union's annual Carolyn Allport scholarship is calling for applicants.  The scholarship is available for any student undertaking postgraduate feminist studies, by research, in any discipline. $5000 per year for up to three years will be awarded to the successful applicant. If you wish to apply, applicants must be currently enrolled in postgraduate study, by research, at an Australian institution. Further specifics apply. Special Fay Gale Seminar: Courage to Change by Professor Alison Phipps

The Courage to Change: Ending Gender Inequality and Sexual Harassment in Australian universities. The Fay Gale Centre is excited to be hosting a special seminar by Professor Alison Phipps (The University of Sussex, UK). At this Fay Gale seminar, Professor Phipps will address the policies and practices that can enable and support structural and cultural change around issues such as gender inequity, bullying, sexual harassment and violence. This event will generate collective understanding of how change at universities can occur, providing practical steps to create a workplace in which gender equity, diversity and care can flourish.
