Level 1, Barr Smith Library
University of Adelaide
Books educate, enlighten and entertain. They are the record of changing culture, science and thought. They provide witness to historic turmoil and human progress, and in turn can influence the future.
In celebration of the University of Adelaide’s 140th anniversary, Rare Books & Special Collections present ‘140 Books: 1874-2014’, an exhibition of books published in each year of the University’s history.
Since 1874, the University Libraries have built substantial collections to support research and teaching, providing access today to more than 2.3 million print and over 260,000 electronic items.
All the items on display are from the Library’s collections and most remain available for borrowing.
The selected works were either best sellers in their time, had a considerable impact on society, or reflected significant historical events. Some will be the subjective choices of the curators, and many will be controversial.
Let us know via the Special Collections Facebook page or via email what you think.
