Biographical Note

David Pope, who always signs his work "Heinrich Hinze", is one of Australia's leading political cartoonists. He began his career drawing cartoons for alternative and union papers in Adelaide, before moving to Canberra where he lives with his wife and children.

From 1985 his cartoons appeared in publications such as the Labour Studies Briefing, Common Cause, The Metalworker, The Socialist, Green Left Weekly, Frontline and Chain Reaction, each beyond the control of industry giants Rupert Murdoch and Kerry Packer.

For years he relieved as occasional cartoonist on the Canberra Times and by 2000, began working regularly on its Sunday Times. His work has also appeared in the National Museum of Australia's annual political cartoon exhibition at Old Parliament House and in 1998 he became the first freelance cartoonist ever to be listed as a finalist for the Walkley Award for best cartoon, with The ‘FU' Holden Howard.

Pope has published three anthologies through his own Scratch! Media and his website www.scratch.com.au provides an archive of his recent political cartoons, including those on industrial relations and international current affairs. His work has also appeared in the annual Scribe series Best Australian Political Cartoons.
