Biography

Harold Arthur (Bill) Lindsay author and conservationist, was born on 13 November 1900 in Hyde Park, Adelaide. Initially working various jobs and supplementing his income through writing for the Bulletin and other magazines, contributing short stories, humorous pieces and articles about nature. He spent 3 years in the Australian Imperial Force (1942-1945) before being discharged and becoming a full time writer, authoring many books for both adults and children, often publishing under pen-names. He continued to contribute to magazine and newspapers, including the Age (Melbourne) and the Sunday Advertiser (Adelaide).

Harold was a strong advocate for conservation, founding the Adelaide Bushwalkers in 1946 - a group dedicated to identifying areas that could be designated as sanctuaries and national parks. He later contributed to the creation of the National Trust of South Australia, which was established in 1955. He died on 4 December 1969 in Highgate, South Australia.

Contents

Scrapbooks containing short stories, reviews and articles, mainly on natural history and South Australian history, written by Lindsay. Typed biographical notes are pasted on the covers of v.1,5,7 and 9. Original collation: 8v. (v.1,5,6-11), 33-36cm. Volumes 3 and 4 were deliberately destroyed by the author. Volume 2 was ruined by water.
