This series consists of two groups of files on matters of particular importance to me when a member of the Colonial Administrative service, an executive officer working for the South Pacific Commission, or a researchers in Pacific Islands history on the staff of the Australian National University. A third group comprises correspondence relating to documentary source material on the Pacific islands, including lists of manuscripts on particular subjects, correspondence on the publication of other people’s work and copies of unpublished manuscripts by various research workers in Pacific studies.(1) Colonial Service and South Pacific

[Professor G.P. Murdock was Chairman of the Anthropology Group and
Maude was Chairman of the Social Sciences Group of the Standing
Committee. The Secretariat was based at the Bernice P. Bishop
Museum.]
9. Retirement from Colonial Service and SPC.
1951-1955.
[Maude retired as Executive Officer, Social Development in November
1955, following the decision to transfer the Commission to Noumea.
He refused an offer in 1952 of the position of Chief Secretary of
the Commission.]

Cultural Change and Stability in Displaced Communities,

[Relating to Phoenix Islands Study financed by the National Science
Foundation. As a result of sustained drought in the Phoenix
Islands, the islanders were re-settled on Gizo Island in the
British Solomons. Maude undertook instead to provide documentary
briefing of research workers on the general project and to prepare
an enthnohistorical introduction to the field surveys.]
