This collection consists of 20 sheets of accounts or bills for stationery items, scribe services and binding work undertaken by Matthew Richards for a Mr Booth (London lawyer?), dated 1770-1788. An additional unrelated account lists the accounts of sales etc for a Dr Michael O’Neill.
Matthew Richards was a stationer registered at Wych St, Temple Bar, London from 1774-1819. From 1774 to 1793 he traded as Matthew and William Richards (Exeter Working papers in Book History)
Accounts from Dec 1770 to December 1773 were from Matthew Richards; accounts from January 1774-December 1788 from Matthew and William Richards.
The accounts list the type of document scribed (bills, bonds, leases, wills, briefs, arguments, letters, settlements, mortgages, articles of separation, Petitions to His Majesty etc), items of stationery supplied (quires of paper, parchment, pens, ink, stone bottles, quills, sand bags, sticks of wax, sewed and bound books etc) and various bound journals, day books etc supplied, with charges detailed. Other charges include fees for men “sitting up all night”.
The collection was purchased from Michael Treloar Antiquarian Booksellers in November 2011.
