MSS 0068
Biographical Note
David Saunders, a graduate of the RMIT and University of Melbourne (Master of Architecture 1959), was Professor of Architecture at the University of Adelaide from 1977 until his early death on 23 September 1986, having previously lectured at the University of Melbourne (1956-68) and at the Power Institute of Fine Arts, Sydney University (1968-77). He was an innovative teacher with a particular interest in the history of architecture, Australian architecture and industrial architecture, and was active in conservation of the built heritage and a member of a number of Heritage organizations - areas he advanced materially by the foundation of the Australian and New Zealand Society for Architectural Historians, by publication of A Manual of Architectural History Sources in Australia and by his teaching and the restructuring of the architectural education program at the University.
These papers were deposited by Kate (Katrina) McDougall after Dr. Saunders' death. They relate to Dr Saunders teaching in the Department of Architecture at the University of Adelaide, in particular his interest in architectural history and to a survey of South Australian wineries conducted as part of a broader project by Saunders on the Industrial Buildings of South Australia commenced in 1980. Kate McDougall undertook the research on the history of the wineries and contributed some of this research to a chapter on 'Winery Buildings of the Barossa Valley' in the publication Vineyard of the Empire: early Barossa vignerons 1842-1939.
