Unknown 59 = Trichophyton concentricum
Clinical presentation: Chronic non-inflammatory lesions in inhabitants of Papua New Guinea caused by T. concentricum showing characteristic concentrically arranged imbricated rings of scaling.
Culture: Culture of T. concentricum on mycobiotic agar showing a slow growing, glabrous, deeply folded thallus ranging from cream to deep orange-brown in colour. Reverse is buff to brown in colour.
Microscopy: Typical "balloon-shaped' chlamydoconidia of T. concentricum. Microscopic morphology of T. concentricum consists of broad, much-branched, irregular hyphae, which may have "antler" tips resembling T. schoenleinii. Chlamydoconidia are often present in older cultures. RG-2 organism.
Comment: Trichophyton concentricum is an anthropophilic fungus which causes chronic widespread non-inflammatory tinea corporis known as tinea imbricata because of the concentric rings of scaling it produces. It is not known to invade hair. Infections among Europeans are rare. Distribution is restricted to the Pacific Islands of Oceania, South East Asia and Central and South America.
