The now sold-out production presents a unique take on the Alice in Wonderland tale set against the desolate backdrop of World War II, London.

On show at the University of Adelaide’s Little Theatre from 10 to 13 October, Alice by Heart is directed by Erin James from the Elder Conservatorium of Music, and features the wonderful second year Music Theatre cohort.

“The audience will embark on an enchanting journey down the rabbit hole with Alice by Heart,” James says.

“The production invites us to find light even in the darkest moments. It’s an homage to the imagination and the transformative power of art, language and love.”

Alice by Heart tells the story of two childhood friends, Alice and Alfred, as they seek refuge from the Blitz in an underground tube station. As Alfred falls ill with tuberculosis, Alice is caught between the innocence of childhood and the harsh reality of the adult world. Through the narrative, the pair confront their fears and escape into a world where imagination reigns supreme.

From the Tony and Grammy award-winning creators of Spring Awakening, Steven Sater, Duncan Sheik and cowriter Jessie Nelson, Alice by Heart is a touching musical inspired by Lewis Carrol’s novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

James seamlessly interprets Nelson and Sater’s poignant narrative with innovative staging and movement.

“The production boasts a talented ensemble whose performances bring the beloved, yet eccentric characters of Wonderland to life. I'm incredibly proud of our cast who bring such depth and beauty to this story,” James says.

“We have chosen to forego design elements and are employing only a handful of props in the production, so the second year Elder Conservatorium Music Theatre students are bringing Wonderland to the stage with their bodies, voices and minds. It’s an honour to guide them through this journey.”

University of Adelaide lecturer Peter Johns is the music director for Alice by Heart, with a mix of contemporary musical theatre styles and classic storytelling. The songs capture the characters' inner struggles reflecting both the dreamlike world of Alice in Wonderland and the devastating impact of war.

“The music serves as a powerful emotional anchor, enhancing the narrative's themes of loss, love, and resilience,” Johns says.

“Whether you are a lifelong fan of Lewis Carrol’s novel or enjoyed Sater and Sheik’s Tony award-winning show, Spring Awakening, this production promises to be an unforgettable experience.”
