Exploring Engagement Within Citizen Science at UWA

Citizen Science is widely regarded as a way to increase community engagement with science as it enables community members to participate in research, and ideally increases community members understanding of scientific concepts and processes. Currently, there are several students within the Science Communication Unit at UWA exploring different aspects of community engagement within Citizen Science projects. In addition, a unit of study focusing on engagement within citizen science was taught within the Master of Science Communication last year. This presentation will present an overview of three of the citizen science-focused research projects that are currently underway, as well as the Citizen Science unit. The speakers in this group presentation are:

  • Ms Chrissy Tustison, PhD student at UWA, and currently located at Scripps Institute of Oceanography in San Diego, California. Chrissy is working on a project that is a collaboration led by the WA Museum and Scripps Institute of Oceanography that aims to use Citizen Science to gain information about Seadragons (see https://seadragonsearch.org/)
  • Ms Stephanie Collins, Master of Science Communication student at UWA. Stephanie is exploring scientists’ attitudes to Citizen Science and in particular the perceptions of scientists of Citizen Science as public engagement with science
  • Ms Tamara Pinkerton, Honours Student in Science Communication. Tamara is examining inclusion in Citizen Science, with a focus on people with disabilities
  • Dr Heather Bray, Lecturer in Science Communication and Coordinator of the Master of Science Communication at UWA. Heather will present an overview of the Citizen Science unit.

By presenting work that is in progress (and some in its early stages) it is hoped that we can generate interesting discussions about how to encourage a greater focus on engagement within citizen science projects.
