Jennifer Lamb - Exchange Alumni Testimonial
Jennifer Lamb completed her exchange at the University of Gothenburg in Semester 1 of 2024. Jennifer went on Exchange for her Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts.
What motivated you to participate in an overseas experience?
I chose to go on exchange so that I could have the opportunity to study in a different place and to travel. As a student of international relations it was something I thought would be very beneficial to my studies.
What was the highlight of your Exchange?
The highlight of my exchange would have to be swimming in the Gothenburg lakes in the spring time, they were so cold but it was so wonderful to spend the day in the national park. It is a big thing in Sweden to spend time outdoors with nature, and since there are so many lakes it is very common to swim in the warmer months (if you are willing to brave the ice melt water).
What challenges did you face during your Exchange, and how did you overcome them?
I had a lot of trouble actually getting on exchange, with all sorts of visa and administrative problems. It took some time and energy to get everything ironed out and it was all perfect in the end. I had to work very hard on staying focused and calm, knowing that I was not the first person to have a hard time getting everything organised.
What new skills or knowledge did you gain from the experience?
I gained the skill of Swedish! I might not be very good, but I can hold a basic conversation and read things!
What is something that would entice you to travel back to (destination)?
I do not need that much enticing... I am already planning. I would love to experience the Swedish winter again with all the snow, it was just so magical.
How did participating in an Exchange influence your personal growth?
Going on exchange was a big step in my personal growth, I gained so much independence and knowledge about myself. I learned how to travel on my own and be very content in doing things on my own!
What was your biggest takeaway from your experience?
My biggest take away was that its ok to not have everything figured out. I was very worried that I would not find any friends or community while on exchange, but I made some of my best friends on exchange. Maybe things did not look like how I planned but they all worked out better in the end.
Do you have 1 piece of advice you would tell other students thinking about going on Exchange?
My one piece of advice would be to not stress about the organising part of exchange, there is always someone who has had the same problem or an expert who can help! It will all work out.
