Course overview
This course provides students with an advanced understanding of the factors that contribute to urban decline, the policy frameworks and agendas designed to regenerate areas in decline, and the opportunities and conflicts that may arise through the enactment of such policies in the areas affected and the wider neighbourhood. The course emphasises critical evaluation of regeneration practices in Australia and internationally, with a focus on social equity, cultural values, and environmental sustainability. Through case studies, site visits, and collaboration with industry and community stakeholders, students will develop the analytical, conceptual, and practical skills needed to contribute to contemporary urban regeneration initiatives.

Course learning outcomes
- Critically evaluate and compare theories, concepts, and principles underpinning urban regeneration in Australia and internationally.
- Apply project management processes to design collaborative approaches for large-scale and long-term regeneration projects in the context of governance structures and stakeholder roles.
- Analyse social, economic, and environmental planning processes and propose strategies for achieving equitable and sustainable outcomes for diverse urban communities.
- Develop and justify conceptual frameworks for regeneration in designated renewal areas, informed by case studies and fieldwork, with attention to how these processes unfold in practice.
- Synthesize insights from industry, government, and community stakeholders to propose context-sensitive regeneration strategies hat reflect differing priorities and institutional dynamics.
