Course overview
This course introduces students to the conceptual and preliminary stages of structural design including developing an understanding of the behaviour and typical use cases of common structural forms and the quantification of load paths and design actions arising from gravity, live loads, wind and earthquake loads.
- Essential Mechanics
- Loads on structures
Course learning outcomes
- Perform hand calculation methods to determine design actions on both determinate and indeterminate structural elements.
- Apply approximate analysis and superposition techniques to convert loads into design actions.
- Demonstrate comprehension of the behaviour of structures by performing qualitative structural analysis.
- Apply computer software to perform structural analysis of different structural forms and verify the computer output with appropriate hand calculation methods.
- Identify and quantify the loads acting on structures using AS1170.
- Describe load paths within a structure and calculate loads and design actions on structural elements as the loads are transferred through a structure.
- Dimension structural members to comply with limit state design criteria.
