Course overview
This course aims to equip students with a thorough understanding of engineering principles essential for traffic impact assessment and the geometric design of rural roads. Through a combination of theoretical instruction and computer-based practical exercises using industry-standard software, students will gain proficiency in designing and managing rural roads. The course also provides an understanding of mechanistic pavement design methods, emphasising the integration of sustainable practices, including the use of recycled materials.
- Traffic Management
- Road Geometric Design
- Pavement Design
Course learning outcomes
- Classify Roads according to their function and perform traffic impact analysis to evaluate the effects of new development on traffic flow, safety, and surrounding areas.
- Apply Australian engineering principles to the planning and geometric design of rural roads, ensuring safe and efficient transportation routes
- Demonstrate proficiency in using industry-standard software for designing rural roads, incorporating both theoretical and practical knowledge.
- Analyse traffic and material properties to apply mechanistic pavement design and evaluate compliance with fatigue and rutting performance criteria
- Select, design, and justify pavement systems for given traffic and environmental contexts, integrating sustainable technologies that reuse and recycle materials.
